Who, What, When, Where, How | Journalism

Journalism is a word that many of us are familiar with. Journalism is defined as “The activity or profession of writing for newspapers, magazines, or news websites or preparing news to be broadcast” (1). Journalism was originally used to describe the reporting of current events in printed form, specifically newspapers, but with the introduction of radio, television, and the internet, the word was expanded to include all printed and electronic communication related to current events. A journalist is a professional who collects, edits, and presents news through the spoken or written word. In addition to covering breaking news, journalists may also write feature stories. You are not a journalist because you tweet, publish a Facebook status, or write an Instagram caption; nevertheless, you are a good journalist if you use those social media networks to communicate the story that needs to be told. 

There is only a short distance between good and great. A competent journalist does more than just write the story. They gather, analyze, and report on news and current events. What makes a story The New York Times Best Seller List material? The journalist. REVA University offers seven qualities that define a good journalist. The qualities include a way with words, thorough knowledge, investigative skills, effective communication skills, professionalism and confidence, persistence and discipline, and ethics (2). Tony the Tiger would say to a journalist who displays such attributes, “They’re Gr-r-reat!” Journalists are responsible for reporting the news honestly and objectively, as well as investigating stories thoroughly. Success in journalism, whether through newspapers, magazines, tweets, or articles, requires certain abilities and skills. So don’t just be a good journalist; be a great one!

Variety is the spice of life. Journalism includes many different specializations. Career Explorer lists twelve common types of journalists. There are investigative, broadcast, data, multimedia, political, sports, science, entertainment, feature, and business reporters, as well as news correspondents and photojournalists (3). Whatever type of journalist you are, the job is the same. You are responsible for gathering, editing, and delivering the story. Discover your niche and start writing. 

The data is in the details. In his article titled How Do Journalists Use Technology And Data Analysis In Investigating Stories?, Delbert wrote, “Technology and data analysis are powerful tools for investigative journalism” (4). He goes on to say, “From collecting and analyzing data to using the internet to uncover sources and information, technology and data analysis can be used to break new ground in journalism” (5). Data analytics and journalism are inextricably connected. Data is even a form of journalism. Pratibha Kumari defines data journalism as follows: “Data journalism is a form of journalism that utilizes data analysis and visualization techniques to tell stories and communicate information” (6). Data analysis is useful in discovering patterns and connections between sources, facts, and events, which journalists can then bring together to tell a story. Journalists use data to tell their stories. They should also use data to share their narratives on their social media platforms. Journalists should develop a strong social media presence. Journalism is important. Rebekah Carter writes, “More than just another form of entertainment, journalism empowers us to make better choices about our own lives and contribute to the lives of others with our actions” (7). As a journalist, you must understand the benefits of your work while also knowing how to best communicate what you write. Social media is a tool in the hands of the journalist.
